When it's time for Jacki Weaver, the Oscar-nominated star of Animal Kingdom, to pick out a red carpet outfit for the February 27 awards ceremony, the Australian actress should have no trouble choosing a fashionable ensemble, thanks to her days in the original Sydney production of the highly glamorous musical Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Right? Not quite.
In a show filled with eye-popping costumes, Weaver played Shirley, a rough and frumpy bartender in the Australian outback who doesn't initially embrace the drag queen lifestyle. The role (which will be played by South Pacific veteran Keala Settle in Priscilla's Broadway run) required Weaver to sport a less-than-flattering dirty tank top, bushy eyebrows and a grimy mullet hairstyle!
Luckily, the drag trio (who will be played on Broadway by Weaver's fellow Australian Tony Sheldon, Tony nominee Will Swenson and Nick Adams) soon show the unlucky in love lady how to have a good time with the help of the disco classic "I Love the Nightlife."
We think it's safe to say Weaver will take a cue from Priscilla's drag queens and opt for something a bit more fabulous than Shirley's standard wardrobe for her big Oscar night!
The Broadway production of Priscilla begins performance February 28 ahead of a March 20 opening at the Palace Theatre.
